What to do with your Extra Magic Time hour

What opens at 8:30 and what does not, and where to go first to make the extra hour count.

If you have access to Extra Magic Time the advantage is real, but there is a catch: it does not open the whole park, it opens part of it. Making the most of it is a matter of knowing which area to go to first, not simply of arriving earlier.

How it works: it normally starts at 8:30, an hour before the general public gets in at 9:30 — always check the exact time in the official app, it changes by season. Guests of the seven Disney hotels, guests of Villages Nature Paris and Gold Annual Pass holders have access — the only annual pass tier that includes Extra Magic Time; the others do not.

What opens during that hour is not fixed: it changes from day to day and between the two parks, and it usually concentrates on a handful of big attractions plus somewhere to have breakfast inside. Which attractions make that particular list changes with the season and with maintenance, so do not treat it as settled without checking the app that same day. Your Route does not work from a generic list: it works out which particular attractions open during that particular hour on the day you go, using the real opening times for that date — so if an attraction is closed for maintenance that week, it simply does not appear as an option for the extra hour.

The strategy that works: head straight for the biggest attraction in the area that opens during that hour, not the one nearest the entrance. Queues fill up fast once the public comes in at 9:30, so the first 20-30 minutes are what really makes the extra hour worth having — after that the difference from a normal queue starts to disappear. If you are with small children, use it for the family attractions that by mid-morning already have 40-50 minutes of queue.

One warning: arriving "at 8:30" means being at the gate at 8:30, not inside the park. With security and the walk to the first attraction, expect to be riding between 8:40 and 8:50 if you are among the first in the entry queue.
